What is Naturopathic Medicine?

Modern naturopathic medicine is a distinct system of healthcare that integrates the most current scientific knowledge with traditional methods of healing. Naturopaths are licensed primary care physicians who are clinically trained in a wide variety of medical systems, both conventional and natural medicine. The foundation of Naturopathic Medicine is the idea that the body has an inherent, ordered and intelligent ability to heal.

Naturopathic physicians support this natural healing process through the use clinical nutrition, herbal medicines, stress management, physical medicine, acupuncture, homeopathy and hydrotherapy.

The word “naturopathy” was first used a little over 100 years ago; however, the basic principles of natural healing have existed for centuries. In the early 1900’s Naturopathy thrived in the United States, with numerous schools and thousands of practitioners across the country. Unfortunately, this came to an end in the 1920’s with the discovery of antibiotics and other “miracle drugs.” Natural medicines fell upon disfavor as the pharmaceutical industry grew in strength and popularity. Within the past three decades, naturopathic medicine is again flourishing as health conscious people are seeking alternatives to prescription drugs.

What is the difference between a medical doctor and a naturopathic doctor?

A licensed naturopathic physician (ND) attends a four-year graduate level naturopathic medical school and is educated in all the same basic sciences as an MD. However, instead of focusing on pharmaceutical drugs, naturopathic medical students learn about nutrition, botanical medicines, homeopathy, hydrotherapy, acupuncture and physical medicine. To compare the curriculum of NDs versus MDs from Yale or Stanford, go to the America Association of Naturopathic Medicine website. After graduation, NDs must also pass rigorous professional board examinations to obtain licensure to practice medicine.

Can naturopathic medicine work with conventional medicine?

Yes, naturopathic physicians are able to design effective treatment programs for patients taking prescription drugs. Often prescription drugs can deplete certain nutrients and NDs can offer supportive care that is both safe and effective.
